GAMEPLAY- Blocking/Guarding +As per usual, Mario can Block just before an enemy attacks. +Mario starts off with the ability to block 1 point of damage. +Every time Mario increases his Battle Level or Quest Level, he can block 1 more point of damage. +When Mario maxes out his Battle Level or Quest Level, he gains 1 extra point in blocking damage. Both types of Levels start out at 1, and maximize at 37.
GAMEPLAY- Enemy Squads +Inspired by part of the Chapter 4 boss battle from Paper Mario 64, some of the weaker enemies may join together into a bigger Squad. The “tell” to when this happens is if the enemy is steaming red on the overworld. +Squad Battles do not occur if Mario or the enemy get a First Strike. +The stats of a Squad are higher than just fighting the same number of those enemies outside a Squad individually. For a more precise calculation… Let N equal the number of enemies in a Squad. HP= HP(3N) ATK= ATK(N) DEF= DEF + N Coins= Coins(2N) Apples= Apples(2N) Oranges= Oranges(2N) Bananas= Bananas(2N) Melons= Melons(2N) Blueberries= Blueberries(2N) Grapes= Grapes(2N) +For example, if Mario fought a Red Gooble Squad of 4 members... HP= 1(3x4)= 12 ATK= 2(4)= 8 DEF= 0 + 4= 4 Coins= 1(2x4)= 8 Apples= 1(2x4)= 8 Apples Oranges= 0 Bananas= 0 Melons= 0 Blueberries= 0 Grapes= 0 +Mario usually only fights a single Squad in these battles. However, late game battles might include 2 Squads.

DON GRATH- Once upon a time in the Frutta Archipelago, Don Grath was the most respected established individual around...and by that, I mean he was a crime boss. Unfortunately, Genes Nuvola's sky fleet has slowed down his business. To the Don, this is a sign of disrespect, and he doesn't stand for disrespect. Kapeesh?
Like his faraway former rival in Rogueport, messing with Grath may lead to the poor grape sleeping with the Cheep Cheeps.
TALOP- A young Frutta melon who loves playing in Buono Park, Talop is very energetic for such a big melon. Unfortunately, he has a habit of losing things- especially his unmarked throwing disc from his dad. Sometimes even his hat from his mom. Maybe Mario and his partners could help out sometimes...?
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 19:56:48 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ: Spoiler-tagging images for more browser-friendly viewing.
KYORSHA- For many years, Kyorsha has served as cheftainess of the Yoshi Village in the Frutta Archipelago. It hasn't been an easy duty, though, between some village scuffles, a few maverick pranksters (including her own son), her troubled relationship with said son, the occasional Legnesect attack, and other dilemmas.
KYOSHID- Son of cheftainess Kyorsha, Kyoshid is quite a handful to look after. He doesn't quite understand what responsibility is, getting him and his mom into all sorts of trouble. Because of this constant tidying up, son and mom's relationship has been strained, though Kyoshid doesn't see what he did wrong.
YOSHIRO- One of the baddest Yoshis around! In fact, Yoshiro's considered the anti-Yoshi by so many, he's a real scourge! While everyone else takes the hard way in his races, Yoshiro takes the easy way out using his special abilities! It's only logical he'd annihilate his racing rivals this way! Opponents would rather switch out than receive pity roses for their loss! Better keep your eye on what's important and not clunk out!
Yoshiro is closely based on Boshi from Super Mario RPG.

TILEOID- A weird formerly geometric creature Mario once fought in an interdimensional adventure, Genes Nuvola has been mass producing their own brand of Tileoids in several colors. In the rush to meet demand, Blubawks might have cut a few corners during production. It shows.
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 19:58:01 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
LEGNESECT- The local termites of the Frutta Archipelago's jungles, Legnesects are connoisseurs of wood and craftsmanship. So much, they argue over who gets to eat the best chair- though that's only if the Queen doesn't accompany them. Even with these arguments, Legnesects can be bad news for people who live in wood housing, such as Yoshis.
QUEEN ASCIASECT- Like any insect collective, Legnesects have a hierarchy including a Queen they have to obey. Though Asciasect prefers to lounge in the hills over the Frutta Archipelago's Yoshi Village, she may come if she's feeling adventurous or annoyed that day.
GAMEPLAY- EXP Formulas +For Battle EXP, Mario requires 30 Fruit for his first level up. Every subsequent level up requires 30 more Fruit on top of the previous requirement. NXBTLV= 30(CURBTLV) +For Quest EXP, meanwhile, Mario requires just 5 Points for his first level up, and 10 for his second. After that, the number increases by 5 more every 2 levels. LV1= 5 to next LV2= 10 to next LV3= 10 to next LV4= 15 to next LV5= 15 to next And so on and so forth.
GAMEPLAY- Quests +Mario must fulfill Quests in order to increase said EXP. +A little under a third of the Quests are mandatory and part of the story. These Quests are on the beaten path, or after a story/level obstacle. +Other optional Quests require Mario to backtrack to previous levels and talk to people…or sometimes objects. +Some characters can give multiple and/or both types of sidequests. +There’s only one Quest of 80+ in the whole “game” that rewards 0 of that EXP... +Though Quests can be replayed, their EXP and item rewards are one-time only. In other words, unlike Battle EXP, there’s a finite amount of Quest EXP (though there’s enough to reach Level 37).
EXAMPLES QUEST- Apples and Oranges Where: Frutta Citta Character: Orera Quest Type: Optional Basic Details: Give Orera 5 Apples and 5 Oranges. Quest EXP Reward: 5 Other Rewards: Apple Tart, Orange Tart QUEST- What’s Thrown Around Doesn’t Always Come Back Where: Buono Park Character: Talop Quest Type: Mandatory Basic Details: Retrieve Talop’s Throwing Disc after he loses it. Quest EXP Reward: 5 Other Rewards: Letter to Kyoshid
QUEST- Hat in the Wind Where: Buono Park (clear “What’s Thrown Around Doesn’t Always Come Back”) Character: Talop Quest Type: Optional Basic Details: Retrieve Talop’s hat which was blown into a hollow tree. Quest EXP Reward: 5 Other Rewards: Apple Pie
QUEST- Chewing the Scenery Where: Yoshi Village Character: Kyorsha the Yoshi Chieftainess Quest Type: Mandatory Basic Details: Stop the Legnesects from eating the Yoshi huts! But when you finish, be ready for a bigger fight! Quest EXP Reward: 5 Other Rewards: Waterdoor Amulet (Queen Asciasect Totem also won from defeating her in battle during quest the first time)
QUEST- Search for Lunch Where: Yoshi Village (clear “Chewing the Scenery”) Character: Kyoshid Quest Type: Optional Basic Details: Bring Kyoshid to 3 different trees in the village. But beware of enemies, as Mario takes a little more damage during this quest. Quest EXP Reward: 5 Other Rewards: Melon Pie (double the effect of the Melon Tart) +The full topic will give more details and play-by-play on the Quests.
GAMEPLAY- The Audience +Whenever the Fruit Tempo meter is filled, the Audience gives Mario extra Fruit after his Battle EXP is calculated. The Fruit Tempo meter can only be filled twice per battle. +Each audience member is worth a different Fruit value. All current attendees are kept on a list, even if not rendered onscreen. +For every 4 points on a filled Fruit Tempo meter, the multiplier of the total extra Fruit earned is increased by 0.2, starting at 1.0. Final Fruit totals are rounded up, to the nearest whole number. +To save time and “budget”, only adults of most species are in attendance. Also, some Fruttas, Yoshi and Jibberjay colors are only male or female. +Some species exhibit extra behaviour upon filling the Tempo meter. Reserve members count for double their special effect. +Sometimes, Audience members gain a gold texture. When this happens (1 in 25 chance), they’re worth 4 times the amount.

JIBBERJAYS- Flaps their wings. For every 6 Jibberjays flapping their wings, Mario and co heal 1 HP each. MALE ORANGE JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Oranges MALE BLUE JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Blueberries MALE PURPLE JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Grapes FEMALE RED JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Apples FEMALE YELLOW JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Bananas FEMALE GREEN JIBBERJAY: 0.1 Melons
DOOGANS- Fist pump in the air. For every 12 Doogans fist-pumping, Mario and co.’s ATK increases by 1. MALE RED DOOGAN: 0.1 Apples MALE GREEN DOOGAN: 0.1 Melons MALE YELLOW DOOGAN: 0.1 Bananas FEMALE ORANGE DOOGAN: 0.1 Oranges FEMALE BLUE DOOGAN: 0.1 Blueberries FEMALE PURPLE DOOGAN: 0.1 Grapes
NOKIS- Blow their horns. For every 12 Nokis doing this, enemy ATK decreases by 1. MALE GREEN NOKI: 0.1 Melons MALE ORANGE NOKI: 0.1 Oranges MALE PURPLE NOKI: 0.1 Grapes FEMALE BLUE NOKI: 0.1 Blueberries FEMALE RED NOKI: 0.1 Apples FEMALE YELLOW NOKI: 0.1 Bananas
GRIZZETIS (take up 3 seats)- Excited rumbling. For every 5 Grizzetis moving wildly in their seats, enemy DEF decreases by 1. MALE GRIZZETI: 0.1 Apples, 0.1 Bananas, 0.1 Blueberries FEMALE GRIZZETI: 0.1 Oranges, 0.1 Melons, 0.1 Grapes
GAMEPLAY- Fruits +Though Mario and co. can spend Fruit on Fruit Caps, he can also eat their juicy prize in bulk in case of an emergency. The only limit is in how many you have, as well as the situation. APPLES- Restores 1 HP/apple eaten. ORANGES- Adds 1 Point to the Fruit Tempo meter/2 oranges eaten. BANANAS- Reduces negative elemental effects (burn, wet, frozen & shock) by 1 turn/30 bananas eaten. Another batch of totems. This is the last set of teaser totems before the full topic, which will contain an in-story explanation for why there's totems of characters from other lands and dimensions at all.

PLESSIE- The surfing, bouncing, Yoshi-like dinosaur from the Sprixie Kingdom, Plessie makes his domain and names a waterfall in the Frutta Archipelago after himself. Once again, Mario and co. might need Plessie's help in clearing a tumultuos obstacle course.
SWOOP- Swoops love eating their fruit. However, if one shared an Apple with you, I'd just throw it away- Swoop fangs are poisonous, after all. And if they're not in the mood for fruit, they might just refill themselves on you...
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 19:59:41 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ: Spoiler-tagging images for more browser-friendly viewing.
DROGICO- Tropical dragon-lizards, Drogicos are considered an apex predator in the Frutta Archipelago's northwest region, Dinosauro Jungle. Usually, they keep the Legnesect population under control, though they also eat fruit. If biting alone doesn't work, Drogicos unleash a frightening roar, paralyzing their foe. A rare few Drogicos can grow up and transform further into a larger dragon...
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:00:03 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
DAGGER REX- The adult form only a select few Drogicos can attain, this particular Dagger Rex is a cantankerous old geezer. Even before Genes Nuvola arrived, Dagger Rex has been helping himself to the melons that grow on the Great Melon Tree. However, with the six Trees drained of their power from the recent attack, Dagger Rex is in an especially cranky mood. Whether with biting, body slamming, and other sharp moves, Dagger Rex is one epic foe to battle.
FLAVIO- An entrepreneur Mario met years ago in Rogueport. Flavio and some of his crew arrive in the Frutta Archipelago before Mario in a rebuilt version of the SS Flavio, simply for a great business opportunity. Unfortunately, the arrival of Genes Nuvola might land Flavio in situations he's not entirely capable of handling.
PUUM- A cute lion girl (specifically a Lyrar) that Luigi, Mario and co. rescued from some nasty Shy Guys in the Round Dimension of Mercadia, Puum helped the gang out as they tried to find the realm's Mercadian Treasures. To say the least, she was rewarded in a positive way even she didn't expect.
Now, thanks to the royal Mercadian wizard, Puum and a few of her closest arrive in the Frutta Archipelago...but it's not for vacation purposes. Let's hope Puum gets some time to relax, while she and the others investigate a sensitive matter.
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:00:58 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
BOMBERTO- A Bob-omb sailor who lives in Rogueport. It might not look like it- in fact, I don't even know how other people can see it- but Bomberto's muscles are PACKED, bro. They're so packed, in fact, that when Flavio was looking for a new crew to accompany him to the Frutta Archipelago, Bomberto was in the top 5 picks. Unfortunately, Flavio forgot to account for Bomberto's appetite.
QUESTION: Why Bomberto and not Pa-Patch? ANSWER: Pa-Patch was going to be in this. However, upon re-checking his character bio and his situation at the end of TTYD, I realized it would be a stretch for Flavio to look for both him and another character (who isn't getting replaced) just to recruit him. This was very last minute, as I had to quickly comb over who lived in Rogueport to sub in for Pa-Patch.
BERRUHS- A Poochie variant called a Faoi Poochie, Berruhs is Puum's pet. In fact, they grew up together, despite the rotten efforts of two vile Shy Guys. Thanks to Luigi and Mario, Berruhs and his mistress found a new life for themselves.
So it's quite a shock to see this protective, proud, ferocious hound in the Frutta Archipelago again. On his mistress' secret service, Berruhs sniffs around the Fruttas' homeland to find a clue relating to some unusual documents...
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:01:28 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
CORAL- A type of mermaid called a Mistune from the alternate dimension of Mercadia, Coral in particular was always taught to be very observant. Unfortunately, her main teacher and aunt set the bar inhumanly high for Coral to meet her standards. Thankfully, travelling with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser gave her a comparatively less pressure free and more natural opportunity to hone her skills. She got quite a reward by the end of the Wonder Journey.
Now, Coral and a few other Mercadians have reappeared in the Frutta Archipelago, searching for something alluded to in a document the royal Mercadian wizard found and gave to the king and queen, who are also on the case. While Puum uses her athletics and Berruhs uses his nose, Coral uses her eyes, her intuition, and her magical harp to find the truth...
ARGULUS- Dudes...stay calm. What? There's nothing to worry about- there's only a giant lion behind you. Just- just ignore it and we'll all be fine-
Oh, never mind- it's just Argulus, king of the Round Dimension of Mercadia. His royal wizard found a document detailing something in the Frutta Archipelago. Wasting almost no time (except to shave his beard and get an outfit more suitable for their destination), Argulus and his closest arrive. In all honesty, Argulus wanted to go on his own, but it's just a habit of doing everything on his own. You know what they say about old habits...

GREAT FRUIT TREES- A few millennia old (3, to be exact), the six Great Fruit Trees ensure the Fruit grown across the Frutta Archipelago is the freshest and healthiest in the entire world, among other tasks. With Genes Nuvola's sky fleet interested in the tree, though, they'll need a hero like Mario to ensure their continuing safety- especially the orange one.
APELKOR (apple, male)- The wisest and oldest. CITRIDUS (orange, female)- The crankiest. MANNI (banana, male)- The strongest. ELONAIRE (melon, female)- The light-hearted. BLULALA (blueberry, female)- The sleepiest. GILBERTO (grape, male)- The concentrated.
DELIRHUFF- Delirhuff considers herself a Doogan of esteemed taste, as well as a mistress of shopping secrets. Nevertheless, she goes against her instincts as best she can and accompanies her family on a camping trip to Ardente Rock. The camping experience might just be an example of taking a fish out of water and nuking it in a microwave for Delirhuff, however...
MAWLEY- Unlike other girls her age, Mawley loves extreme experiences like camping. She likes it so much, in fact, she begged her whole family, including her mom Delirhuff, to go on one. Where does she get all that energy from? Ah, children...

QUARRINA- An adult Mistune from the Round Dimension of Mercadia, Quarrina was one of King Argulus' six loyal Mercadian Knights, having known the big lion for decades. She was so loyal to her King's cause, she often lost sight of what was best for everyone. In the end, Quarrina was able to prove her loyalty beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Now, despite having other responsibilities, Quarrina is still quite a fighter. Her resolve not letting up, she and a few others, including her niece Coral, accompany Argulus to the Frutta Archipelago. Ain't no Genes Nuvola soldiers subduing this driven Mistune!
Quarrina is the last past Paper Mario NPC character, official or DMZ, who shows up in the main story. Almost everyone else is main series, completely new, or a Paper Mario enemy. Of course, characters from the original Paper Mario trilogy and previous DMZ topics are also Totems.
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:03:53 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
MUTTIGAN- A rugged Doogan man, Muttigan is just as athletic as his kids- he's actually their inspiration for how excited they are. That said, he can appreciate taking it slow sometimes, making it tough for the man to keep up.
JOROO- A Doogan beyond his prime years, Joroo is an old friend of Muttigan. Though he may not be as strong as he used to, ad needs to catch a breather more often than usual, Joroo still enjoys seeing his friend's litter and wife prosper.
BILLIK- A rowdy ruff Doogan boy, Billik takes after his dad and older sister closely. That youthful spirit also drives Billik to be the first on an activity, if his sister hasn't already beat him to the punch.
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:04:30 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
HIRK- A park ranger at Ardente Rock. The proud and bragging Hirk is Billik's hero. Beyond his bragging, though, is a tour guide who looks out for his fellow campers. Unfortunately, he's also very competitive, like his sister. If those two cross paths, in fact, they drop everything for extreme challenges in otherwise tame activities...
HARA- A park ranger at Ardente Rock, Hara is pretty nonplussed about everything. She just sits by, only coming in if she's needed. However, within that laid-back fur is a competitive spirit. She meets Hirk's eyes, they compete in a duel to the fates in even the most boring of games.
...You know, there's something odd about Hirk and Hara compared to other Frutta Archipelago locals. Are they even from around here? Now that I look at them, didn't most of their kind perish in some ancient conflict far away a millennia ago? Must be pretty lonely, with only each other, and someone else I can't recall among the Frutta.
Hirk and Hara are members of the Vellbex species from the Wii U recut. To say they got redesigned from the universally panned original Vellbex template would be an understatement.
The third Vellbex (also a new character) will be revealed in the full topic.
Last Edit: May 28, 2017 20:05:23 GMT -5 by TyrorexDMZ
BOSS BROLDER- One of Bowser's former minions, Boss Brolder accompanied his own boss to the Sprixie Kingdom a while back.
Now, in a coincidence to end all coincidences, Boss Brolder set up camp in the Frutta Archipelago's Doogan Mines, searching for treasure. It's a miracle the big rock dude's even here, considering he's a giant rock. And with Boom Boom and Pom Pom nearby, there's no telling what kind of reckless reunion could take place.
That said, not all of Boss Brolder's lesser minions are completely rock solid in their obedience.
LUPULE- One of Boss Brolder's newer minions, Lupule is easily distracted by shiny stuff, like coins. She's like a cat when you stop and analyze her, actually. This annoys Boss Brolder to no end, as a job that takes the average Brolder one hour could take Lupule four. However, this seeming hindrance of a lack of focus doesn't negate the simple strength behind her powerful rolling. That strength may even give Mario the advantage in his quest if he gives the Brolder girl a chance.
FIELD ABILITY- Brolder Roll (rolls really fast with Mario and his other partner atop, destroying most tough objects and adding velocity off ramps)
BATTLE ABILITIES (first two ranks only) Broll Roll/Brolder Roll -START/Reach Super Rank -Ground enemies -3 > 2 ATK/6 > 3 > 1 ATK -Press the A Button when Lupule is about to flatten a foe to keep going.
Rev Up/Revver Up -START/Reach Super Rank -Lupule -Increases the power of all hits in Lupule’s next attack by 3./Increases the power of all hits in Lupule’s next attack by 4. -Hold the A Button. When Lupule is sweating, let go. Hold on too long, and Lupule’s power doesn’t increase next turn.
Broll Toss -Reach Super Rank -One enemy, aerial -11 ATK -Move the crosshair with the Left Control Stick. Press the A Button to throw the rock. The cursor somewhat violently shudders.
BANDIT- Wherever there's treasure, there's sure to be unscrupulous characters around to swipe it. And boy, do Bandits fit that description! Bandits will do anything for a quick coin, especially body checking their foe! If they swipe any treasure, Mario has one turn to KO them. Otherwise, the Bandit will make off with their pillage, as well as any Fruit they would have rewarded. And their own boss has a unique way to punish underperforming Bandits...
ARI SWORDA- The leader of the 40+ Bandits, Ari Sworda is a peculiar individual, no? He apparently works with Genes Nuvola as an independent contractor, or a sword-for-hire- in exchange for gathering Fruit energy from the Great Banana Tree of Ardente Rock, Ari Sworda gets not only his promised bounty, but any other treasure in the Doogan Mines. This puts him in constant conflict with recent arrivee Boss Brolder. Not that Ari Sworda finds him, or anyone for that matter, a serious threat, due to his sword skills and swordmancy, as well as his bulk. He's generally very lenient with his Bandits. However, if they mess up a serious gig, Ari Sworda uses his fangs to ensure his minions stay focused next time. That said, he only uses his fangs as a very last resort.
Ari Sworda actually comes from a faraway desert land that surprisingly isn't Sarasaland, yet close to it. As a result, he has not only Bandit ancestry, but also the legacy of Pionpis.
TRIVIA- Ari Sworda was actually conceptualized years earlier for a now shelved unreleased fangame topic called Paper Mario World Tour.
FIAMMA- "Long ago on a distant island, I, FIAMMA, the SCORCH-bending master of flames, unleashed an UNSPEAKABLE fireball for Re Fenice. But a FOOOO-lish red plumber wielding a sturdy hammer used a First Strike to op-poooose me.
Before I lost all my HP, I TORE OPEN a hole in his overalls, and inflicted the BURN status effect. NOW, the plumber seeks to return to his tailor, and FIND a Totem to resist the flame that. is. Fi-AMMAAAAA..."
GELO- As Fiamma creates extra heat for Genes Nuvola, Gelo cools things down. While Fiamma handles the volcanic areas of the Frutta Archipelago, Gelo handles the cold section. And contrary to Fiamma burning foes, Gelo freezes them.
